Cheddar Cheese Scones
Indulging in the warmth and comfort of freshly baked cheddar cheese scones is like embracing a cosy hug on a chilly day. These savoury delights, with their golden crusts and gooey pockets of melted cheese, are a testament to the simple joys of homemade baking.
To embark on a culinary journey to scone perfection, gather the essential ingredients: flour, baking powder, salt, butter, milk, and of course, sharp cheddar cheese. The magic of cheddar cheese scones lies in the quality of the cheese. I always aim for a sharp or extra-sharp variety for maximum flavour.
Begin by preheating the oven and preparing a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the dry ingredients – flour, baking powder, and salt. Cut cold butter into small cubes and work it into the flour mixture using a pastry cutter or your fingertips until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
Next, grate the cheddar cheese and add it to the flour mixture, tossing gently to distribute it evenly. Pour in the milk and stir until a soft dough forms. Be careful not to overmix, as this can result in tough scones.
Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and gently knead it a few times until it comes together. Pat the dough into a circle or rectangle, about 1 – 1 1/2 inch thick. Next use a sharp knife or biscuit cutter to cut out individual scones.
Place the scones onto the prepared baking sheet, leaving some space between each one. Brush the tops with a little egg/milk for a golden finish, and sprinkle with a pinch of extra cheese. It’s naughty but hey why not?
Bake the cheddar cheese scones in the preheated oven for 12-15 minutes, or until they are puffed and golden brown. The aroma of freshly baked scones fills your kitchen, tempting you to indulge in a warm, cheesy treat straight.
Once baked to perfection, allow the scones to cool slightly before serving. Enjoy them warm with a dollop of butter or a smear of tangy chutney for an irresistible savoury snack. However serve them as an accompaniment to soup or salad for a delicious combination.
In conclusion, cheddar cheese scones are a delightful fusion of flaky pastry and sharp cheese, embodying the essence of comfort and indulgence. Whether enjoyed for breakfast, brunch, or a cosy afternoon tea, these savoury treats are sure to delight the senses and warm the heart.
Cheddar Cheese Scones is a dish I love. Making a scone is lovely but adding Cheddar Cheese gives it a massive hit of flavour. I have served these for breakfast and brunch and snacks. Add a little ham and pickle and you have a perfect snack.

A lovely change to the standard scone. The cheese gives the scones an added taste that works so well.
