Remove the chicken from its packaging and take out any giblets from the cavity. Pat the skin dry with kitchen paper. Dry skin helps the chicken develop a lovely crisp finish.
Combine the olive oil, garlic powder, paprika, mixed herbs, onion powder, salt and black pepper in a small bowl. Stir until the ingredients form a loose paste.
Rub the seasoning mixture over the whole chicken, including the sides and underneath. If you can gently loosen the skin over the breast, rub a little seasoning underneath too. Add half a lemon to the cavity if desired.
1.6 kg Whole chicken, ½ medium Lemon
Preheat the air fryer to 180°C if your model recommends preheating. Place the chicken in the basket, breast side down, ensuring that it fits comfortably without touching the heating element.
Cook at 180°C for approximately 30 minutes. Carefully turn the chicken over so the breast faces upwards, then cook for another 25–40 minutes. Cooking times vary according to the chicken's size and the air fryer, so start checking early.
Insert a meat thermometer into the thickest part of the breast and thigh, avoiding the bone. The chicken must reach at least 75°C in the thickest parts. If necessary, continue cooking in short intervals until it reaches the safe temperature.
Transfer the chicken to a clean carving board and leave it to rest for 10 minutes. Carve into portions and serve with your favourite vegetables, potatoes and gravy.
Tips:Choose the right size: A chicken around 1.4–1.6 kg suits many medium or large air fryers, but check your appliance's capacity.Keep the skin dry: This helps create a crispier finish.Adjust the seasoning: Try smoked paprika, rosemary or thyme for a different flavour.Avoid overcrowding: Leave room for air to circulate around the chicken.Check the temperature: Do not rely on cooking time or skin colour alone to determine whether the chicken is cooked.Rest before carving: This helps retain moisture and makes carving easier. What to Serve with Air Fryer Whole Chicken:Roast potatoesRoasted vegetablesChicken gravyOther good accompaniments include creamy mashed potatoes, Yorkshire puddings, buttered cabbage or a fresh green salad.
