I love finding ways to make a good family meal without spending the whole afternoon in the kitchen. Roast chicken has always been a favourite in our house, but using an air fryer makes the job that little bit easier. You still get that lovely golden skin and tender meat, but you can enjoy all the flavour of a traditional roast without having to switch on the oven.
An Air Fryer Whole Chicken is a great choice for a Sunday lunch, although there is no reason to save it for the weekend. It works just as well for a midweek family dinner when you fancy something filling and homemade. Best of all, the chicken does not need lots of fancy ingredients to taste delicious.
Getting That Lovely Golden Skin
For me, one of the best parts of roast chicken is the skin. When it turns golden and crisp, it adds a wonderful contrast to the soft, juicy meat underneath. Fortunately, an air fryer does a lovely job of creating this texture because the hot air moves around the chicken as it cooks.
There are a few simple things that help make a difference. Drying the skin before cooking helps it crisp up, while a little oil gives the seasoning something to cling to. I also like to use garlic, paprika, black pepper and mixed herbs. These everyday ingredients give the chicken plenty of flavour without masking its natural taste.
Of course, you can change the seasoning to suit your own preferences. Rosemary and thyme give the chicken a traditional roast dinner flavour, while smoked paprika adds a slightly deeper taste. A little lemon zest also works beautifully, particularly if you enjoy a fresher flavour.
Why I Enjoy Using an Air Fryer
One thing I particularly like about cooking chicken in an air fryer is the convenience. There is less need to heat a large oven, and the appliance usually reaches its cooking temperature much faster. This can be especially useful when you are preparing dinner for a smaller family.
However, you do need to choose the right size of chicken. It must fit comfortably inside the basket, with enough room for the hot air to circulate. A chicken that is too large may cook unevenly, so it is always worth checking your air fryer’s instructions before you begin.
I would also recommend checking the chicken carefully towards the end of cooking. Air fryers vary in size and performance, so cooking times can differ. Always make sure the meat has cooked all the way through before serving. A food thermometer should read at least 75°C in the thickest part of the meat, away from the bone.
What Can You Serve With Air Fryer Chicken?
This is where the dish becomes particularly useful because you can serve it with almost anything you fancy. For a traditional Sunday roast, I would choose roast potatoes, carrots, peas and plenty of gravy. Yorkshire puddings are another favourite, especially when everyone comes to the table with a healthy appetite.
If you want something a little lighter, try serving the chicken with a fresh salad, steamed vegetables or buttery new potatoes. Creamy mashed potatoes also make a lovely accompaniment, particularly during the colder months.
Another reason I enjoy cooking a whole chicken is that the leftovers rarely go to waste. The remaining meat makes wonderful sandwiches for lunch the next day. You can also shred it into a pasta dish, add it to a simple curry or use it to make a hearty chicken soup.
A Roast Chicken Worth Making Again
There is no need to make cooking complicated to produce a meal that everyone enjoys. A few simple seasonings, a suitably sized chicken and a little care can give you a delicious result with surprisingly little effort.
Remember to let the chicken rest for a few minutes before carving, as this helps the juices settle and makes serving easier. Then bring it to the table with your favourite sides and let everyone tuck in.
For me, an Air Fryer Whole Chicken is exactly the sort of recipe that earns its place in a home cooking collection. It is familiar, versatile and full of flavour, with plenty of opportunities to try different seasonings. Once you have made it a couple of times, you will soon discover the combination that your family loves most.
Flavouring and Aromas
To give your Air Fryer Whole Chicken a deeper, darker golden-brown skin, try increasing the paprika to 2 teaspoons and adding ½ teaspoon of smoked paprika, which will create a richer colour and a subtle smoky flavour. You can also add a pinch of ground turmeric for extra warmth and colour, while garlic powder, onion powder and dried thyme will provide a lovely savoury taste. Mix the spices with a tablespoon of olive oil and rub the mixture evenly over the chicken skin before cooking. For an even deeper finish, increase the temperature to 190°C for the final 5 minutes, provided your air fryer instructions allow it, but keep a close eye on the skin to prevent the spices from burning. Always check that the thickest parts of the chicken reach a safe internal temperature of 75°C before serving.
Other popular chicken flavours that work beautifully in an air fryer include:
- Lemon and Herb: Lemon zest, garlic, rosemary and thyme for a fresh, traditional flavour.
- Honey and Garlic: Honey, garlic, soy sauce and a little black pepper for a sweet and savoury finish.
- Smoky BBQ: Smoked paprika, garlic powder, onion powder and BBQ seasoning for a rich, smoky taste.
- Peri-Peri: Paprika, cayenne pepper, garlic, lemon juice and oregano for a spicy kick.
- Cajun Spice: Cajun seasoning, paprika, garlic powder and black pepper for a bold, warming flavour.
- Mediterranean Herbs: Oregano, basil, thyme, garlic and olive oil for a fragrant, savoury coating.
- Tandoori Style: Garam masala, cumin, coriander, paprika, garlic and yoghurt for a colourful, aromatic finish.
- Chinese Five Spice: Chinese five-spice powder, garlic, ginger and a little soy sauce for a fragrant, warming flavour.
- Mustard and Honey: Wholegrain mustard, honey, garlic and black pepper for a tangy, gently sweet coating.
- Garlic and Parmesan: Garlic, dried herbs and finely grated Parmesan for a rich, savoury flavour.

Instructions
- Remove the chicken from its packaging and take out any giblets from the cavity. Pat the skin dry with kitchen paper. Dry skin helps the chicken develop a lovely crisp finish.
- Combine the olive oil, garlic powder, paprika, mixed herbs, onion powder, salt and black pepper in a small bowl. Stir until the ingredients form a loose paste.Olive oil, 1 tbsp Garlic powder, 1 tsp Paprika, 1 tsp Dried mixed herbs, 1 tsp Onion powder, ½ tsp Salt, ¼ tsp Black pepper
- Rub the seasoning mixture over the whole chicken, including the sides and underneath. If you can gently loosen the skin over the breast, rub a little seasoning underneath too. Add half a lemon to the cavity if desired.1.6 kg Whole chicken, ½ medium Lemon
- Preheat the air fryer to 180°C if your model recommends preheating. Place the chicken in the basket, breast side down, ensuring that it fits comfortably without touching the heating element.
- Cook at 180°C for approximately 30 minutes. Carefully turn the chicken over so the breast faces upwards, then cook for another 25–40 minutes. Cooking times vary according to the chicken’s size and the air fryer, so start checking early.
- Insert a meat thermometer into the thickest part of the breast and thigh, avoiding the bone. The chicken must reach at least 75°C in the thickest parts. If necessary, continue cooking in short intervals until it reaches the safe temperature.
- Transfer the chicken to a clean carving board and leave it to rest for 10 minutes. Carve into portions and serve with your favourite vegetables, potatoes and gravy.
