Garlic Mushrooms with Crostini

When I host a dinner party, I like to begin the meal with something that feels special without being overly complicated. Garlic Mushrooms with Crostini is one of those dishes that never fails to delight guests. It looks inviting, smells wonderful and offers plenty of flavour in every bite.

There is something comforting about mushrooms cooked with garlic. The combination has stood the test of time for good reason. The earthy flavour of the mushrooms works beautifully with the warmth and aroma of fresh garlic. Together, they create a starter that feels both rustic and elegant.

One of the things I enjoy most about this dish is its versatility. It suits casual family meals just as well as formal dinner parties. In fact, I have served it at everything from relaxed garden gatherings to festive celebrations. Every time, the empty plates tell the same story.

The key attraction is the balance of flavours. Garlic plays an important role, yet it should never overwhelm the dish. Instead, it provides just the right amount of hit. The flavour is noticeable from the first bite, but it allows the mushrooms to remain the star of the show. As the mushrooms cook, they absorb the garlic and develop a rich savoury quality that is incredibly satisfying.

Of course, the crostini is just as important. Crisp slices of toasted bread provide a wonderful contrast to the tender mushrooms. Each crunchy bite complements the soft texture of the topping. Furthermore, the crostini acts as the perfect vehicle for soaking up all those delicious juices and flavours.

Presentation also helps make this starter memorable. A generous spoonful of garlic mushrooms piled onto golden crostini creates an appetising display. When placed on a serving platter, the dish immediately catches the eye. Guests often reach for one before I have even finished introducing the menu.

Another reason I return to this starter so often is that it encourages conversation. People recognise the ingredients, yet they still appreciate the care that goes into preparing it well. As a result, it creates a welcoming atmosphere at the table and sets the tone for the rest of the meal.

Garlic Mushrooms with Crostini also pairs wonderfully with many main courses. It works alongside chicken, beef, fish, and vegetarian dishes. Therefore, it is easy to include in almost any dinner party menu.

For me, the best starters are those that combine simplicity with flavour. Garlic Mushrooms with Crostini achieves exactly that. It offers rich savoury notes, appealing textures, and a comforting aroma that fills the room. Most importantly, it brings people together around the table. That is why this classic appetiser remains one of my favourite ways to begin a memorable meal.

Larder Essentials:

Instructions

Prepare the Crostini:

  • Preheat the oven to 190°C (170°C fan).
  • Slice the baguette into 1cm thick rounds. Arrange the slices on a baking tray. Brush lightly with a little olive oil and season with a pinch of salt and pepper.
1 large French baguette, salt, black pepper
  • Bake for 8 to 10 minutes until golden and crisp. Turn the slices halfway through cooking for even browning.

Cook the Mushrooms:

  • Heat the remaining olive oil in a large frying pan over medium-high heat.
    3 tbsp olive oil
  • Add the sliced mushrooms and cook for 6 to 8 minutes. Stir occasionally until they release their moisture and begin to brown.
    500 g chestnut mushrooms

Add the Garlic:

  • Reduce the heat slightly. Add the minced garlic and cook for 1 minute. Stir continuously to prevent the garlic from burning.
    4 cloves garlic
  • Season with salt and black pepper to taste.
    salt, black pepper

Finish the Dish:

  • Remove the pan from the heat. Stir through the chopped parsley. If desired, add a small knob of butter for extra richness.
    2 tbsp fresh parsley, butter

Serve:

  • Arrange the warm crostini on a serving platter. Spoon the garlic mushrooms over the crostini just before serving, or serve the mushrooms in a bowl alongside the crostini so guests can help themselves.

Notes

My Tips:
Chestnut mushrooms provide a deeper flavour, but button mushrooms also work well.
Add a squeeze of lemon juice before serving for extra freshness.
A sprinkle of grated Parmesan can add a savoury finish.
Serve as a starter, light lunch, or party appetiser.
