Jelly and Banana Trifles

Indulging in a dessert needn’t mean compromising on health, and Jelly and Banana Trifles are a perfect example. This delightful dish combines the refreshing taste of sugar-free orange jelly with fresh fruits, sponge fingers, creamy fromage frais, low-fat custard, and a sprinkle of pecan nuts. It’s a light, guilt-free treat that’s perfect for any occasion.
The Layers of Flavour
The foundation of this trifle is sugar-free orange jelly, which adds a zesty, refreshing note. Prepare the jelly according to the packet instructions, then pour it into serving glasses or a trifle dish and allow it to set in the fridge. The vibrant orange jelly not only brings a burst of citrus flavour but also provides a beautiful, colourful base for the dessert.
Next, add a layer of fresh orange segments. These juicy bites enhance the citrusy theme and add natural sweetness. On top of the orange segments, place sliced bananas. Bananas add a creamy texture and a hint of sweetness that perfectly complements the tart orange.
Sponge and Creamy Layers
Once the fruit is included, it’s time to add the sponge fingers. Break them into pieces and arrange them over the bananas. The sponge fingers will soak up the juices from the fruit and jelly, becoming soft and flavourful.
To add a creamy element without the extra calories, spread a generous layer of fromage frais over the sponge fingers. This light and tangy cheese adds a delightful creaminess. Following this, pour on a layer of low-fat custard, which adds a rich, velvety texture to the trifle.
The Finishing Touch
Finally, finish off your Jelly and Banana Trifles with a sprinkle of chopped pecan nuts. The pecans add a satisfying crunch and a nutty flavour that balances the sweetness and creaminess of the dessert.
I made these for my grandchildren and I was under the impression they were enjoying them. Until I discovered my husband had eaten them all! Indeed you are never too old for jelly it seems.
Serving Suggestions
Obviously, Jelly and Banana Trifles are best served chilled, making them a perfect dessert for warm days or a refreshing end to a hearty meal. They can be prepared in individual glasses for a more elegant presentation or in a large trifle dish for a family-style dessert.
This trifle is a delightful way to enjoy a variety of textures and flavours in a healthier dessert option. With its layers of citrus jelly, fresh fruit, sponge, and creamy toppings, it offers a satisfying and refreshing treat that can be enjoyed guilt-free.

Everybody enjoys jelly but this is a new level. The orsange and the banana are perfect partners in the orange jelly. Admit I used spray cream and it was gorgeous.

Might soak the sponge fingers in a little rum or sherry for an adult version.
