Sticky Honey Garlic Chicken

There are some meals that look innocent enough when they first reach the table. Then you take one bite, reach for another, and suddenly everyone is scraping the last drops of sauce from the plate. Sticky Honey Garlic Chicken is exactly that sort of meal. It is sweet, savoury, sticky and wonderfully moreish, which makes it a perfect choice for Five Ingredient Friday.

I love recipes like this because they prove that homemade food does not need a long shopping list. The five main ingredients do most of the hard work. Chicken thighs or wings bring plenty of flavour and stay beautifully juicy, while honey creates that gorgeous sticky finish. Garlic adds its familiar punch, and soy sauce brings the salty savoury depth that balances the sweetness. Fresh ginger then adds a warm little kick in the background.

Best of all, you probably have a couple of useful extras sitting in the cupboard already. Sesame seeds and chopped scallions make excellent cupboard-staple additions to this dish. They might seem like small details, but they can make the finished meal look and taste even better. A scattering of sesame seeds adds a gentle nuttiness, while chopped scallions bring freshness and a little crunch.

The sauce really is the star of the show. As the ingredients come together, the honey develops into a rich, glossy coating that clings to every piece of chicken. Garlic and ginger work their magic at the same time. Meanwhile, the soy sauce stops the sauce from becoming overly sweet. The result has a lovely balance that keeps you coming back for another mouthful.

I particularly enjoy making this dish when I want something comforting without spending hours in the kitchen. There is something satisfying about watching the sauce bubble and thicken. You know you are heading towards something special when the chicken starts to shine beneath that sticky coating.

Of course, the smell is another reason I make it. Once the garlic, ginger, honey and soy sauce start warming together, the kitchen quickly fills with an irresistible aroma. It is the sort of smell that brings people wandering into the kitchen asking when dinner will be ready.

Although chicken thighs work wonderfully here, the real attraction is the combination of flavours. You get sweetness from the honey, saltiness from the soy sauce and warmth from the ginger. Garlic adds another layer, while the chicken provides a wonderfully savoury base. Together, they create a dish that tastes far more complicated than it actually is.

For me, this is exactly what Five Ingredient Friday should be about. It is not about making food boring simply because the ingredient list stays short. Instead, it encourages us to choose ingredients that work hard and complement each other. A handful of well-matched ingredients can produce an incredibly satisfying homemade meal.

I also love how easy this dish is to turn into a complete family dinner. Serve the sticky chicken alongside fluffy steamed rice and some crisp vegetables. The rice is particularly good because it catches any sauce that escapes from the chicken. Personally, I think leaving a little sauce on the plate should be considered a crime!

The sesame seeds deserve a mention too. Sprinkle them over the chicken just before serving, and they add a lovely finishing touch. Then add the chopped scallions for a splash of freshness. They also provide a pleasant contrast to the rich, sticky sauce.

This is one of those dishes where presentation does not need to be complicated. Place the glossy chicken on a serving dish, scatter over the sesame seeds and scallions, and let everyone help themselves. It looks inviting without needing fancy restaurant tricks.

Most importantly, Sticky Honey Garlic Chicken is finger-licking food. You can enjoy it neatly with a fork, of course, but the temptation to mop up that delicious sauce is difficult to resist. There is nothing wrong with enjoying food with enthusiasm.

So, if you are looking for a simple Five Ingredient Friday meal that delivers plenty of flavour, this one deserves a place on the menu. It is quick, comforting and packed with the sort of sticky, sweet and savoury goodness that makes homemade cooking so enjoyable. More importantly, it leaves you with that wonderful feeling that you have created something special from just a few everyday ingredients.

Five Main Ingredients:

Cupboard Staples:

Instructions

  • Pat the chicken wings dry with kitchen paper. Season lightly with salt and freshly ground black pepper.
8 large chicken wings, ½ tsp salt, ½ tsp freshly ground black pepper
  • Add the honey and soy sauce to a small bowl. Stir in the chopped garlic and grated ginger until everything combines.
4 tbsp honey, 4 tbsp soy sauce, 4 cloves garlic, 1 tbsp fresh ginger
  • Heat the cooking oil in a large frying pan over medium-high heat. Add the chicken thighs and cook for approximately 5–6 minutes on each side. The outside should become nicely browned.
    1 tbsp cooking oil
  • Reduce the heat to medium and pour the honey, soy, garlic and ginger mixture over the chicken.
  • Turn the chicken several times so the sauce coats every piece. Allow it to bubble gently for around 8–10 minutes. Keep turning the chicken as the sauce thickens.
  • The chicken should be completely cooked through, with no pink meat in the centre. If using a food thermometer, the thickest part should reach 75°C.
  • Continue cooking for another minute or two if necessary. The sauce should become thick, glossy and sticky rather than watery.
  • Remove the pan from the heat and sprinkle the sesame seeds and chopped scallions over the chicken.
1 tbsp sesame seeds, 3 large scallions
  • Spoon the sticky chicken onto warm plates and drizzle over any remaining sauce from the pan.

Notes

Tips:
Don’t rush the browning. Giving the chicken enough time in the pan creates a lovely savoury flavour before the sauce is added.
Watch the heat once the honey goes in. Honey can catch quickly if the pan becomes too hot, so keep the sauce bubbling gently.
Turn the chicken regularly. This helps the sauce coat the thighs evenly and gives them that gorgeous glossy finish.
Don’t throw away the sauce! Any sauce left in the pan is perfect spooned over the rice. It is often the best bit of the meal.
Five Ingredient Friday Note:
The five main ingredients are chicken thighs, honey, soy sauce, garlic and fresh ginger. Sesame seeds, chopped scallions, cooking oil, salt and pepper are treated as cupboard staples, keeping this dish within the spirit of Five Ingredient Friday.
Storage:
Allow leftovers to cool, then place them in a covered container and refrigerate promptly. Eat within 2 days and reheat thoroughly until piping hot throughout.
For the best texture, reheat the chicken gently in a frying pan with a small splash of water. This helps loosen the sticky sauce without drying out the chicken.
