Apple and Camembert Pittas

Some of the best meals begin with a simple idea. You open the fridge, spot a few fresh ingredients, and decide to try something new. That is exactly how these Apple and Camembert Pittas came to life in my kitchen. I enjoy experimenting with flavours, and every now and then a combination surprises me. Sweet apples, creamy Camembert, crunchy walnuts, and a touch of cinnamon may sound unusual at first, yet they work together beautifully.

The first bite offers a wonderful contrast of textures. The warm pitta stays soft and lightly crisp around the edges. The Camembert becomes deliciously creamy without completely melting away. Fresh apple slices keep their gentle bite, while chopped walnuts add a welcome crunch. Finally, the cinnamon brings everything together with a gentle warmth that makes the whole dish feel comforting.

I often enjoy trying ingredients that people do not normally pair together. Sometimes the results disappoint, but occasionally a recipe earns a permanent place on the family menu. This one certainly has. It feels special enough for guests, yet it remains quick and easy enough for an ordinary weekday lunch. That combination always wins in my home.

The choice of apple can also change the final flavour. A sweeter variety creates a softer finish, while a sharper apple provides a pleasant contrast against the rich cheese. I enjoy trying different types throughout the year because every harvest brings something slightly different. Each version feels familiar while still offering a little surprise.

Serving the pittas warm makes a huge difference. The gentle heat softens the cheese and releases its wonderful aroma. At the same time, the apples become slightly tender without losing their freshness. Every mouthful delivers creamy, fruity, and nutty flavours that feel balanced rather than overpowering.

These pittas suit many occasions. They make an excellent light lunch, an easy weekend snack, or a relaxed evening meal when you want something satisfying without spending hours cooking. They also work well cut into smaller portions for sharing at parties or family gatherings. Guests often ask what is inside because the combination catches their attention immediately.

I also enjoy how flexible this dish can be. You can increase the walnuts for extra crunch or add a little more cinnamon if you enjoy warm spices. Even so, I find the original balance difficult to beat. Every ingredient has its own purpose and none of them steals the spotlight.

Another reason I return to this recipe is its simplicity. There is no need for complicated techniques or expensive ingredients. Instead, a handful of everyday items combine to create something that tastes far more impressive than the effort involved. Those are often the recipes that become family favourites.

If you enjoy experimenting in the kitchen, give these Apple and Camembert Pittas a try. They prove that unusual flavour combinations can become unforgettable meals. Sometimes stepping outside your comfort zone leads to your next favourite lunch.

Pantry Ingredients

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 180°C (160°C fan), 350°F or Gas Mark 4.
  • Slice each pitta along one edge to form a pocket without cutting all the way through.
    2 large pittas
  • Lightly brush the outside of each pitta with the melted butter or olive oil. This helps the bread become lightly golden during baking.
    1 tsp butter
  • Arrange the apple slices inside each pitta pocket, distributing them evenly.
    1 medium apple
  • Sprinkle the cinnamon evenly over the apples.
    ½ tsp ground cinnamon
  • Add the sliced Camembert, tucking it between the apple slices so the cheese melts evenly.
    150 g Camembert
  • Scatter the chopped walnuts inside each pitta.
    40 g walnuts
  • If you enjoy a touch of extra sweetness, drizzle a little honey over the filling.
    1 tsp honey
  • Season lightly with a pinch of sea salt and a few twists of black pepper.
1 pinch sea salt, Freshly ground black pepper
  • Place the filled pittas onto a lined baking tray.
  • Bake for 7–8 minutes, or until the cheese has softened and begun to melt while the pittas are warm and lightly crisp around the edges.
  • Remove from the oven and allow them to stand for 1 minute before serving.
  • Serve immediately while the Camembert is warm and wonderfully creamy.

Notes

Serve with:
Mixed leaf salad
Homemade coleslaw
Sweet potato wedges
Tomato soup
Rocket and pear salad
Cranberry sauce
Fresh grapes
Pickled onions
Tips:
Choose a firm apple so it keeps a pleasant texture after warming.
Toast the walnuts for 2–3 minutes before adding them for an even deeper flavour.
Brie can be substituted for Camembert if preferred.
Wholemeal pittas provide a lovely nutty flavour and extra fibre.
Add a few fresh thyme leaves before baking for a subtle herbal note.
Storage:
These pittas are best enjoyed freshly baked. If necessary, assemble them up to 12 hours in advance, cover and refrigerate. Bake just before serving for the best flavour and texture.
