A Breakfast Trifle is a simple dish that packs the goodness of fruit with yogurt and oats/muesli. When we are in a rush, and the children are running late for school, this breakfast gives them the energy to get to lunch. I make sure I have the ingredients in advance because at least one day a week its needed!
Breakfast Trifle is one of those clever little dishes that feels like a treat. However it still sits comfortably in the “good start to the day” category. It takes the familiar idea of a dessert trifle and gives it a breakfast-friendly twist. By using wholesome ingredients and naturally sweet flavours to create something both light and satisfying.
I first came across this idea when looking for ways to make breakfast a bit more exciting without turning it into a sugar-heavy affair. What makes this version work so well is the balance. You’ve got muesli for texture and slow-release energy, fruit for freshness, yoghurt for creaminess, and a splash of apple juice to tie everything together with a gentle sweetness.
Typically, the base begins with around 50 g of muesli divided between four glasses. I like using wine glasses for this because they show off the layers beautifully, but any clear glass will do the job. A little apple juice, about 120 ml in total, is added to soften the muesli slightly and give it a light, fruity lift without making it soggy.
On top of that comes a generous layer of around 450 g of strawberry yoghurt. This adds a smooth, creamy contrast to the grains underneath and brings a lovely pink hue that makes the dish look as good as it tastes. The final flourish is the fruit. Roughly 350 g of mixed seasonal fruits works wonderfully here. I tend to use whatever is freshest. Berries in summer, sliced apples and pears in autumn, or even citrus in winter for a sharper edge.
What I really enjoy about Breakfast Trifle is how adaptable it is. You can easily swap ingredients depending on what you have in the fridge. The structure always stays the same, but the flavours can change with the seasons. That keeps it interesting throughout the year.
It’s also ideal for busy mornings. Everything can be assembled quickly, and it feels far more special than a standard bowl of cereal or yoghurt. The layered look gives it a bit of elegance, making it perfect for brunches or even a relaxed weekend breakfast. It’s perfect for when you want something a little different without too much effort.
Breakfast Trifle proves that simple ingredients, when thoughtfully combined, can turn an ordinary morning into something quietly enjoyable and satisfying.
