Beautiful Beef Skewers have to be one of my favourite barbecue nibbles. They are amazingly simple to produce, the marinade is liquid paradise and they take 30 minutes to feed 6 people. The marinade uses traditional oriental style ingredients with garlic, ginger, red chilli and soy sauce. I use beef for this recipe but it works just as well with chicken and pork.
These skewers are a perfect snack and/or canape and are good served on their own. However, but add peanut satay dip for that tasty easy addition with little effort. Serve as part of a main dish with rice or grains or as a side for those with big appetites.
I like to use a good rump or sirloin steak for these beautiful beef skewers for their taste and texture. Just remember to trim any excess fat prior to marinating. I will add the recipe for satay sauce as these two recipes are a perfect match like bacon and eggs.

Beautiful Beef Skewers
Ingredients
Skewer Ingredients
- 500 g beef rump/sirloin
- 1 large onion chunks
- 1 large green bell pepper chunks, red or yellow
- 1 large red chilli sliced
- 1 large lime wedged
- 2 tbsp runny honey
- 100 g sesame seeds
Marinade Ingredients
- ½ large red onion
- 1 large red chilli finely sliced
- 2 cloves garlic peel/mince
- 1 inch ginger grated
- 2 tbsp dark soy sauce
- 1 large lime zest only
- 2 tbsp brown sugar
- 1/2 bunch cilantro coriander/chop as garnish (optional)
Instructions
- Pour tap water into a large bowl and submerse the wooden skewers. This will prevent them from burning/scorching and possible adding an unpleasant taste to the beef.
- Chop the beef into bitesize pieces and put to one side for now.500 g beef
- In a large glass/plastic mixing bowl add the onion, ginger, garlic, chilli, lime zest, soy sauce and sugar and stir to combine.½ large red onion, 1 large red chilli, 2 cloves garlic, 1 inch ginger, 2 tbsp dark soy sauce, 1 large lime, 2 tbsp brown sugar
- Add the bitesize pieces of beef to the mixing bowl and stir again to combine. Make sure all of the beef is coated in the marinade. Cover with plastic wrap/clingfilm and pop into the fridge for at least an hour but ideally 12 hours.
- Once marinated, place the beef on the skewers with white onion, bell peppers and chillies.1 large onion, 1 large green bell pepper, 1 large red chilli
- Turn on the barbecue to a medium heat and lightly oil the grill. If your using the stove then place a frying pan/griddle over a high heat but add no oil as you don’t want to fry it.
- Place the skewers onto the grill and cook for about 3 minutes each side and then turning over. Use the left over marinade to baste the beef keeping it totally moist.
- When the beef is charred on all sides and the onion and peppers etc are cooked remove from the heat and add a little drizzle of honey and a sprinkling of sesame seeds.2 tbsp runny honey, 100 g sesame seeds
- Serve with chopped coriander and lime wedges as part of a main dish.1 large lime, 1/2 bunch cilantro
