Pan Fried Spicy Prawns

I always enjoy cooking prawns because they take very little time to prepare and can be turned into something delicious with just a few simple ingredients. Pan Fried Spicy Prawns are a good example. They have a lovely warmth from the spices, a little kick of heat and that natural sweetness that makes prawns such a treat. The best part is that the spice does not overpower the seafood, so you can still enjoy the flavour of the prawns themselves.

This is the sort of dish I like to make when I want something tasty without spending hours in the kitchen. It works just as well when friends come round as it does when the family fancies a little something different. Serve a small portion before the main meal, put a plate in the middle of the table for everyone to share, or enjoy them as a snack when you feel like treating yourself.

Getting the Best Out of Your Prawns

For me, the secret to good pan fried prawns is getting the cooking right. Prawns do not need long in the pan, and leaving them for too much time can make them tough. Cook them until they turn pink and opaque, with a firm but juicy texture. When they are done properly, they have a lovely bite and taste far better than prawns that have been left to cook for too long.

The seasoning is just as important. I like a spicy flavour that builds gently as you eat, rather than one that leaves your mouth burning. A little chilli, some garlic and a selection of warming spices can work beautifully together. You can always add more chilli if you enjoy hotter food, but I think a moderate level of heat allows the sweetness of the prawns to come through.

A squeeze of fresh lemon is another simple addition that I would not want to miss. Its sharpness lifts the flavour and balances the spices nicely. Freshly chopped parsley or coriander also makes a lovely finishing touch, adding colour and freshness to the finished dish.

When to Serve Pan Fried Spicy Prawns

One of the things I like most about this dish is its versatility. If I am preparing a meal for guests, a few spicy prawns make an excellent starter. They look inviting on a serving plate, especially with lemon wedges on the side, and they are easy to eat without making the first course too heavy.

They are equally good as a side dish. Serve them alongside rice, roasted vegetables or a fresh salad for a meal with plenty of flavour. Crusty bread is another good choice because it gives you something to enjoy with the tasty juices left in the pan.

For a more casual occasion, I would simply put the prawns into a bowl and let everyone help themselves. They make a lovely addition to a buffet or a relaxed evening with friends. You could even tuck them into warm flatbreads with lettuce and tomatoes for a quick lunch.

Fresh or frozen prawns can both work well, although frozen prawns should be fully thawed and drained before cooking. Raw prawns are particularly suitable for this dish because they take on the seasoning as they cook. If you use prawns that have already been cooked, take care not to heat them for too long.

A Little Spice Goes a Long Way

I believe that some of the best dishes are often the simplest. You do not need a long list of ingredients or complicated cooking methods to make something worth serving. With Pan Fried Spicy Prawns, it is all about choosing good prawns, seasoning them well and keeping a close eye on the pan.

The gentle heat makes this dish interesting, while the natural sweetness of the seafood keeps every mouthful balanced. Better still, you can easily adjust the seasoning to suit whoever is coming to dinner.

Whether you serve them as a starter, a side dish or a tasty snack, Pan Fried Spicy Prawns are a lovely addition to any home cook’s repertoire. They are quick, full of flavour and simple enough to prepare whenever the mood takes you. For me, that is exactly what good home cooking should be.

Instructions

  • If using frozen prawns, allow them to thaw completely. Drain them well and pat dry with kitchen paper. This helps them fry rather than steam. Peel and finely chop the garlic, and prepare the lemon and fresh herbs.
  • Heat the olive oil in a large frying pan over medium heat. Add the chopped garlic and cook for about 30 seconds, stirring regularly. Add the chilli powder, paprika and ground cumin, then stir for another 15–20 seconds. Keep the heat moderate so the garlic and spices do not burn.
1 tbsp olive oil, 2 cloves garlic, 0.5 tsp chilli powder, 0.5 tsp paprika, 0.25 tsp ground cumin
  • Add the prawns to the pan and toss them in the spiced oil until evenly coated. Cook raw prawns for approximately 2–4 minutes, depending on their size, turning them as they cook. They are ready when they turn pink and opaque throughout. Avoid overcooking, as this can make them rubbery.
    150 g raw prawns
  • Add the lemon juice and season with salt and black pepper to taste. Stir everything together and scatter over the chopped parsley or coriander. If the pan looks dry, add a small splash of water to loosen the spices into a light coating.
0.5 medium lemon, salt, freshly ground black pepper, 1 tbsp fresh parsley
  • Transfer the prawns to a warm serving plate and spoon over any remaining juices. Add a few lemon wedges and serve while hot.

Notes

Tips:
Keep the heat balanced: Start with the suggested chilli powder and add a little more next time if you prefer extra heat.
Dry the prawns first: Excess water can prevent the prawns from frying properly.
Watch the garlic: Burnt garlic tastes bitter, so keep it moving in the pan.
Using cooked prawns? Add them after the spices have warmed and heat them just until piping hot, following the packet instructions.
Make it a meal: Serve with rice, crusty bread, a green salad or grilled vegetables.
