Farfalle is a popular type of pasta more commonly known as bow-tie pasta or butterfly pasta. In Italian Farfalle means butterfly but the also look like small bowties.  In the Italian region of Emilia-Romagna, farfalle are known as strichetti (a local word for “bow ties”). Farfalle date back to the 16th century in the Lombardy and Emilia-Romagna regions of Northern Italy. It is very popular type of pasta as it is quick to cook and children enjoy it.
