Sesame Seed Buns

Sesame seed buns are a staple in many households and restaurants, known for their subtle nutty flavour and soft texture. These simple yet delightful buns are often topped with sesame seeds, giving them a slightly crunchy exterior that contrasts beautifully with their soft, pillowy insides. While they are most famously known for being the go-to choice for burgers, sesame seed buns have much more to offer when it comes to versatility in meal preparation.
A Perfect Partner for Burgers
It’s impossible to talk about sesame seed buns without mentioning their association with burgers. Whether it’s a classic beef burger, a juicy chicken fillet, or a vegetarian patty, the sesame seed bun is a natural fit. The slight crunch from the seeds complements the savoury and often juicy filling, while the softness of the bun allows for easy biting and ensures that the flavours of the burger shine through.
For gourmet burger lovers, these buns are an ideal canvas for creative twists. From adding avocado, halloumi, and pickled vegetables, to experimenting with different sauces, the sesame bun holds everything together with a sturdy but tender texture. Grilling the buns lightly adds an extra layer of flavour, making them slightly crispy without losing their softness.
Sandwiches and Beyond
Sesame seed buns aren’t just limited to burgers; they also make excellent bases for sandwiches. Their soft and slightly sweet taste works well with a variety of fillings. A sesame seed bun with slices of roasted chicken, a layer of fresh salad, and a drizzle of honey mustard can make for a delicious lunch. Likewise, for those who prefer a lighter option, pairing a sesame bun with a simple filling like hummus and grilled vegetables creates a satisfying yet healthy meal.
For breakfast, these buns can serve as a tasty alternative to toast or bagels. Fill them with scrambled eggs, crispy bacon, or smashed avocado for a filling morning meal. The seeds add a touch of texture and a rich flavour that pairs well with many breakfast ingredients.
Complementing Barbecue Meals
Another ideal use for sesame seed buns is during barbecues. With their slight crispness and fluffy texture, they serve as an excellent side for grilled meats like sausages, kebabs, or barbecued chicken. The mild nutty flavour from the sesame seeds also complements smoky or spicy dishes well.
Try serving them alongside pulled pork or brisket for an easy-to-eat barbecue sandwich. The sesame seed bun’s ability to hold its shape, even when paired with saucy or rich fillings, ensures that your meal stays intact and enjoyable throughout.
A Satisfying Snack
Sometimes, simplicity is best, and sesame seed buns can be enjoyed on their own as a quick snack. Lightly buttered and served warm, they make for a satisfying treat with a cup of tea or coffee. You could also split them open and toast them, serving with your favourite spreads—be it butter, jam, or cream cheese. They are a versatile snack that can be enjoyed at any time of day.
Sesame seed buns offer much more than their traditional role in a burger. Their soft texture, combined with the slight crunch of sesame seeds, makes them a versatile option for a variety of meals. Whether you’re looking for a base for sandwiches, a complement to barbecue dishes, or even a simple snack, sesame seed buns are a fantastic choice. Their neutral flavour allows them to pair well with a wide range of ingredients, ensuring that they remain a staple in kitchens around the world.

Instructions

  • In a large bowl, mix together the flour, yeast, sugar and salt.
500 g strong white bread flour, 7 g dried yeast, 1 tbsp sugar, 1 tsp salt
  • Add the warm water and softened butter, and stir until a soft dough forms.
300 ml warm water, 50 g unsalted butter
  • Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead for about 10 minutes, or until the dough becomes smooth and elastic.
  • Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover it with a damp tea towel, and leave it in a warm place to rise for 1 to 1.5 hours, or until it doubles in size.
  • After the dough has risen, punch it down to release the air and divide it into 8 equal portions.
  • Shape each portion into a ball and place them on a baking tray lined with parchment paper. Ensure there’s enough space between each bun for rising.
  • Cover the buns with the tea towel again and let them rise for another 45 minutes to 1 hour, or until they are visibly puffy.
  • Preheat the oven to 200°C (180°C fan)/400°F/Gas Mark 6.
  • Brush the tops of the buns with the beaten egg and sprinkle sesame seeds generously over each one.
1 large egg, 2 tbsp sesame seeds
  • Bake the buns in the preheated oven for 15 to 18 minutes, or until they are golden brown and sound hollow when tapped on the bottom.
  • Transfer to a wire rack to cool before serving.

I loved how these buns turned out, but the rising times were a bit long for my schedule. However, the results were worth it—soft, fluffy, and just the right amount of sesame seeds on top.
