Strawberry Waffles

Strawberry waffles are a dish that is a perfect balance of comfort and indulgence. This classic mix of a warm, crispy waffle, sweet macerated strawberries, and a generous dollop of cream offers a delightful treat that can be enjoyed at any time of the day.
At the heart of this dish is the humble waffle, a golden-brown creation with a light, fluffy interior and a satisfying crispiness on the outside. Waffles, originally from Belgium, have found their way into the hearts of people worldwide, and it’s easy to see why. Their subtle flavour and versatile nature make them an ideal for a variety of toppings. Yet, when paired with strawberries, the waffle truly shines.
Strawberries, with their vibrant red colour and naturally sweet, slightly tangy flavour, are the perfect partner to the rich waffle. However, the magic truly happens when these strawberries are macerated. Maceration involves soaking the strawberries in sugar, which draws out their juices and enhances their natural sweetness. The result is a luscious, syrupy mixture that complements the waffle beautifully, adding both moisture and a concentrated burst of flavour.
Cream, the final component, brings everything together. Whether it’s a light, airy whipped cream or a thicker, richer clotted cream, the cream adds a luxurious texture to the dish. Its smoothness contrasts with the crunch of the waffle and melds harmoniously with the strawberries, creating a truly decadent experience.
What makes strawberry waffles so appealing is their versatility. They can be enjoyed as a leisurely weekend breakfast, a delightful brunch option, or even as a comforting dessert. The simplicity of the ingredients allows for endless variations, yet the dish remains a timeless classic.
Beyond its delightful taste, strawberry waffles also evoke a sense of nostalgia. The combination of waffles, strawberries, and cream is reminiscent of summer afternoons. It’s a dish that brings people together, whether enjoyed in the comfort of home or at a cosy café.
In essence, strawberry waffles are more than just a meal; they are a celebration of simple, yet exquisite flavours that bring joy to any occasion.

Instructions

  • In a bowl, combine the sliced strawberries, sugar, and lemon juice. Stir gently to coat the strawberries evenly.
2 tbsp sugar, 1 tbsp lemon juice, 400 g fresh strawberries
  • Cover the bowl and let the strawberries macerate for at least 30 minutes, allowing the flavours to meld and the juices to form.
  • In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt.
250 g plain flour, 2 tbsp sugar, 1 tbsp baking powder, 1/2 tsp salt
  • In a separate bowl, beat the eggs and then add the milk, melted butter, and vanilla extract. Mix until well combined.
2 large eggs, 350 ml milk, 85 g unsalted butter, 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and stir until just combined. The batter should be slightly lumpy; do not overmix.
  • Preheat your waffle iron according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Grease the waffle iron with a little butter or non-stick spray.
  • Pour an appropriate amount of batter into the waffle iron (usually about 1/2 cup per waffle, but this may vary depending on the size of your waffle maker).
  • Cook for 3-5 minutes, or until the waffles are golden brown and crisp.
  • Repeat until all the batter is used. This recipe should yield approximately 8 waffles.
  • Serve the warm waffles topped with the macerated strawberries and a generous dollop of whipped cream. Drizzle the strawberry juices over the top for extra flavour.
250 ml double cream, 1 tbsp icing sugar

I made these strawberry waffles for a weekend brunch, and they were a big hit. The waffles were light and airy, and the strawberries provided a fresh burst of flavour. The cream added a nice richness without being too heavy.

The waffles were crisp and delicious, and the macerated strawberries added a beautiful flavour. The whipped cream was a nice touch, though I might try adding a little lemon zest to it next time for a bit of extra zing.

I made these strawberry waffles for my kids, and they absolutely loved them! The waffles were light and not too dense, and the strawberries were sweet and juicy. They especially loved piling on the whipped cream. I

The waffles themselves have a perfectly crispy exterior and a light, airy interior that pairs beautifully with the macerated strawberries.

The whipped cream was light and airy, enhancing the overall indulgence of the dish. My only suggestion would be to adjust the maceration time for the strawberries, as I found a longer soak brought out even more flavour.

The only thing I’d suggest is maybe adding a hint of vanilla to the whipped cream for an extra layer of flavour. Overall, a great dish
