I have always loved a Beef Samosa. Whether it be as a side dish or snack it doesn’t matter. They are small enough not to ruin your appetite but full enough to fill a gap. The samosas are little filo pastry parcels for convenience. Samosas can be eaten with a knife and fork or as finger food.
Beef samosas are a delightful snack that combines rich flavours and textures in a crispy, golden pastry. Originating from the Indian subcontinent, samosas are a popular street food and party snack worldwide. Traditionally, samosas are made with various fillings, but beef samosas bring a heartier, savoury touch to the classic. Filled with spiced minced beef and aromatics, these samosas deliver a satisfying taste experience with each bite.
The filling for beef samosas typically begins by cooking minced beef with onions, shallots, and thyme. The mince is browned over medium heat, which allows the flavours to meld together, while the onions and shallots soften and release their sweetness. Adding a hint of thyme introduces a subtle herbal aroma, creating a balanced flavour profile. Once the mixture is cooked, a generous tablespoon of curry powder is stirred in, giving the filling a warm, slightly spicy edge. This seasoning not only enhances the beef’s natural flavour but also brings a hint of Indian cuisine’s signature warmth and complexity.
Filo pastry provides the perfect crispy exterior for these samosas. Traditionally, samosas are made with thicker, homemade dough, but filo offers a lighter, flaky crust that becomes wonderfully crisp when fried. Working with filo requires a gentle touch, as the sheets are thin and can tear easily. Slicing the filo into strips makes it easy to fold the filling into small, neat triangles. Each spoonful of beef mixture is added to the pastry and folded to create compact, bite-sized portions.
Deep frying is essential to achieve the desired texture. Once the oil is heated to a high temperature, the samosas are fried until golden brown, ensuring a consistent crunch on all sides. This frying method gives beef samosas their distinct, satisfying crispiness, which contrasts beautifully with the juicy, spiced filling inside. Enjoyed hot, beef samosas are a delicious snack or appetiser, perfect for gatherings or simply as a comforting treat with a cup of tea or chutney.
