Indian Chawal Balls

Indian Chawal Balls are a superb side dish and snack using up left over cooked rice. Combined with grated cheese, chili and mustard powder for a bite with a kick. These are ideal as a side dish and as a snack and complement any Indian meal. Also, these can be made in advance and kept in the fridge until needed so good for parties etc.
Indian Chawal Balls are a delightful and versatile dish that brings the vibrant flavours of India to your table. These rice-based balls are seasoned with a blend of spices, creating a savoury and satisfying bite that is perfect as a snack, appetiser, or even a main course. With their crispy exterior and soft, flavourful interior, Chawal Balls are a treat for the senses and a great way to use leftover rice creatively.
The essence of Chawal Balls lies in their simplicity and adaptability. Made primarily from cooked rice, these balls are infused with a mix of traditional Indian spices such as cumin, coriander, and turmeric. This spice blend gives the Chawal Balls their distinctive aroma and a depth of flavour that is quintessentially Indian. Often, finely chopped vegetables like onions, carrots, and peas are added to the mix, enhancing both the taste and nutritional value of the dish.
One of the great things about Chawal Balls is their versatility in serving options. They can be enjoyed on their own, accompanied by a variety of dipping sauces. Mint chutney, with its refreshing and tangy taste, pairs wonderfully with the spiciness of the Chawal Balls. Tamarind chutney offers a sweet and sour contrast that complements the savoury notes of the dish. For those who prefer a bit of heat, a spicy tomato or chilli sauce can add an extra kick.
Chawal Balls also make a great addition to a larger meal. They can be served as a side dish alongside curries, dals, and vegetable dishes, adding a delightful texture and flavour contrast. Pair them with a cooling yoghurt raita, which not only complements the spices but also adds a refreshing element to the meal. A simple salad with cucumber, tomatoes, and red onions dressed in lemon juice can provide a light and crisp counterbalance to the rich Chawal Balls.
For a more substantial meal, consider serving Chawal Balls with a hearty lentil soup or a mixed vegetable curry. The combination of flavours and textures will create a satisfying and well-rounded dining experience. Whether you’re looking for a snack, an appetiser, or a side dish, Indian Chawal Balls are a delicious and versatile choice that can bring a taste of India to any meal.

They had a nice crunch and the flavors were good, but I think I’ll add more spices next time to suit my taste. Overall, a decent recipe that just needs a little tweak for spice lovers like me.
