If you enjoy corned beef hash then you are going to adore Mexican Hash – Picadillo. This Mexican dish contains Chillies, cumin and cinnamon packing a lovely heat and punch. However, it is not overpowering at all. This version has the added bonus of having almonds in the recipe. They add a subtle background flavour that helps bring everything together.
Mexican Hash (Picadillo)

Ingredients
- 2 lbs ground beef
- 1 large onion chopped
- 1 cup raisins
- 1 tbsp chili powder
- 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1/2 tsp ground cumin
- 3 cloves garlic finely chopped
- 2 medium apples peeled, cored, and chopped
- 15 oz tomatoes chopped
- 1/2 cup slivered almonds toasted
Instructions
- Cook the beef and onion in a large skillet over moderate heat until the beef is browned.2 lbs ground beef, 1 large onion
- Drain the beef and combine with the remaining ingredients except the almonds in a slow cooker.1 cup raisins, 1 tbsp chili powder, 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon, 1/2 tsp ground cumin, 3 cloves garlic, 2 medium apples, 15 oz tomatoes
- Cook covered on low until most of the liquid is absorbed, 3 to 4 hours.
- Alternately, cook tightly covered in a 300F (150C) oven for 2 hours.
