There is something wonderfully comforting about hearing the crunch of a perfectly golden chicken schnitzel. That first bite brings together a crisp coating, tender chicken and a bright squeeze of lemon.
Fried Chicken Schnitzel has become a favourite for many home cooks because it delivers simple flavours with a satisfying texture. The combination of crunchy breadcrumbs and juicy chicken creates a meal that feels special without being complicated. Furthermore, the fresh lemon adds a sharp finish that balances the richness of the fried coating.
This delicious dish takes inspiration from traditional European cooking, where schnitzel has been enjoyed for generations. Although many people associate schnitzel with veal, chicken provides a lighter and equally tasty alternative. The thin strips of chicken create plenty of crispy edges, which makes every mouthful enjoyable.
Also, Fried Chicken Schnitzel works beautifully for many occasions. It can become the centrepiece of a family dinner, a casual lunch, or a weekend treat shared with friends. The golden pieces look inviting on the plate and always encourage people to dig in.
The beauty of this dish comes from its contrast of textures. The outside offers a crunchy bite, while the inside remains soft and full of flavour. Moreover, the lemon brings freshness that keeps the meal feeling light and refreshing.
For example, this dish fits perfectly into a summer menu with colourful side dishes. It also makes a comforting choice during colder months when you want something warm and satisfying. Therefore, it has a place on the table throughout the year.
Possible dishes to serve with Fried Chicken Schnitzel include:
- Creamy mashed potatoes
- Crispy roasted potatoes
- Fresh garden salad
- Coleslaw with a light dressing
- Buttered green beans
- Steamed vegetables
- Homemade chips
- Tomato and cucumber salad
- Garlic bread
- Rice pilaf
- Pasta salad
- Pickled vegetables
- Sweet potato fries
- Fresh crusty bread
Meanwhile, the choice of sides can completely change the character of the meal. A simple salad creates a lighter plate, while potatoes and vegetables create a more traditional comfort meal. In addition, a selection of sauces such as garlic mayonnaise, tomato relish, or herb dressing can add extra personality.
Fried Chicken Schnitzel also makes a wonderful option when entertaining guests. The crispy strips are easy to share and pair well with a variety of accompaniments. As a result, it becomes a dish that encourages conversation and relaxed dining.
Finally, the charm of this meal comes from its familiar flavours and homemade appeal. It reminds us that great food does not need complicated ingredients or fancy presentation. A crunchy coating, tender chicken, and a slice of lemon can create something truly memorable.

Fried Chicken Schnitzel
Equipment
- large frying pan or deep fryer
- Air Fryer for air fryer method
Ingredients
- 4 large chicken breasts
- 100 g plain flour
- 2 large eggs
- 2 tbsp milk
- 150 g breadcrumbs
- 50 g Parmesan cheese grated optional
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 1 tsp smoked paprika
- 1 tsp dried parsley
- ½ tsp salt
- ½ tsp black pepper
- Vegetable oil for frying
- Lemon wedges for serving
Instructions
Preparing the Chicken:
- Place each chicken breast between two sheets of baking paper. Using a meat mallet or rolling pin, gently flatten the chicken until it is around 1cm thick. This helps the chicken cook evenly while creating more surface area for the crispy coating.4 large chicken breasts
- Cut the flattened chicken into strips or smaller schnitzel portions, depending on your preferred serving style. Pat the chicken dry with kitchen paper to help the coating stick properly.
Creating the Coating:
- Prepare three shallow bowls. Add the flour to the first bowl and season it with a little salt and pepper.100 g plain flour, ½ tsp salt, ½ tsp black pepper
- In the second bowl, whisk together the eggs and milk until combined.2 large eggs, 2 tbsp milk
- In the third bowl, mix the breadcrumbs with garlic powder, smoked paprika, dried parsley and Parmesan cheese if using. The seasoning in the breadcrumbs creates a delicious flavourful crust around the chicken.150 g breadcrumbs, 1 tsp garlic powder, 1 tsp smoked paprika, 1 tsp dried parsley, 50 g Parmesan cheese
- Coat each piece of chicken first in the seasoned flour, making sure it is lightly covered. Next, dip it into the egg mixture before finally pressing it into the breadcrumbs. Ensure each piece has an even coating for the best crispy finish.
Traditional Frying Method:
- Heat enough vegetable oil in a large frying pan to shallow fry the chicken. The oil should be hot but not smoking, around 170°C to 180°C if using a thermometer.Vegetable oil
- Carefully place the coated chicken into the hot oil and cook for around 3 to 4 minutes on each side. The schnitzel should become golden brown and crispy while the chicken remains tender inside.
- Remove the cooked schnitzel and place it onto kitchen paper to absorb any excess oil. Serve immediately with fresh lemon wedges for squeezing over the top.Lemon wedges
Air Fryer Method:
- For a lighter alternative, Fried Chicken Schnitzel can be cooked successfully in an air fryer.
- Preheat the air fryer to 200°C for approximately 3 minutes. Lightly spray both sides of the breaded chicken with cooking oil to help the coating become golden and crisp.
- Place the schnitzel pieces into the air fryer basket in a single layer. Avoid overcrowding because the hot air needs space to circulate around each piece.
- Cook for 10 to 14 minutes, turning halfway through the cooking time. The chicken should be golden, crispy, and cooked through before serving.
- For extra crunch, spray the chicken lightly with oil again after turning. Cooking times may vary slightly depending on the thickness of the chicken pieces and the type of air fryer used.

I normally have pork but the chicken is a lot more moist and totally delicious.
A really dependable recipe with excellent results. I served mine with roasted potatoes and steamed broccoli for a complete meal.
Lovely flavours and a satisfying crunch. Next time I may add a little smoked paprika to the flour for even more depth.
This was easy enough for a weeknight dinner but tasty enough to serve when friends visit. Everyone commented on how crispy it was.

The breadcrumb coating stayed on perfectly during cooking, which doesn’t always happen with other recipes. Great instructions.
The chicken was cooked perfectly, and the breadcrumb coating had a lovely texture. I’d probably make a double batch next time because it disappeared so quickly.
