Crispy Fried Tofu is a such a simple recipe which results such as amazing flavour. The addition of the soy sauce and onion powder give the tofu an amazing flavour which transforms it. You can swap the soy sauce for tamari for a gluten free meal.
Serve as a main dish or as a filling in a tortilla/wrap. Alternatively, serve as part of a salad, stir fry, or with roasted vegetables and as a canape with tasty dips. Its crunchy exterior provides a satisfying contrast to the fresh vegetables, while its mild flavour allows the other ingredients to shine.
Most people think tofu is bland but it carries flavours incredibly well. Try adding chilli sauce or sriracha to the marinade for heat. Add curry powder to the corn starch mixture for the Indian inspired flavour. Also you could use teriyaki sauce instead of soy for a Japanese flavour. Alternatively use Toasted Sesame oil for that slightly nutty flavour. There are so many option to use, if you discover a good mixture add the recipe.

Ingredients

Instructions

  • Drain and cut the tofu into cubes.
    400 g tofu
  • Add to a mixing bowl along with the soy sauce, onion powder and black pepper and gently mix.
1 ½ tbsp soy sauce, ½ tsp onion powder, ½ tsp ground black pepper
  • Put to one side for 5 – 10 minutes to let the tofu absorb the flavour.
  • Remove the tofu from the bowl and discard the liquid.
  • Add 4 tbsp of corn starch to a shallow dish add some of the tofu. Gently toss to coat the tofu.
    6 tbsp corn starch
  • Remove the covered tofu and repeat the process with the rest. You will probably need to add more corn starch as you go. Sometimes, I use 4 tablespoons other times up to 6. You can use a freezer bag instead of the shallow dish if you prefer.

Pan Fried

  • Place a large frying pan over a medium high heat and add the oil.
    2 tbsp vegetable oil
  • When hot add the tofu and fry until a lovely golden brown on all sides.
  • Remove to a paper covered plate to drain any excess oil and serve.

Air Fryer

  • Turn on the air fryer to 200C/400F and place the coated tofu cubes into the basket.
  • Place in the air fryer once hot and cook for 10 minutes or until they are golden brown.

Oven Baked

  • Preheat the oven to 200C/400F/Gas Mark 6 and line a baking tray with greaseproof/parchment paper.
  • Place the coated tofu on the lined baking tray in a single layer and place in the oven for 15 minutes. Remove and turn the tofu over and place back in the oven for a further 10-15 minutes or until golden brown.
