In the world of preserves, there’s a gem that often gets overlooked – the delightful cherry chutney. Bursting with the sweetness of cherries, the earthiness of walnuts, and the warmth of cinnamon and cloves, this condiment is a true taste sensation that elevates any dish it graces.
Cherry chutney is a versatile delight, perfect for spreading on sandwiches, pairing with cheeses, or dolloping onto roasted meats. Its vibrant flavour profile adds a pop of excitement to every bite, making it a must-have addition to any culinary repertoire.
To create this tantalising treat, you’ll need a generous helping of fresh cherries, their plump juiciness providing the base for the chutney’s luscious texture. Combine them in a saucepan with chopped walnuts, adding a satisfying crunch and nutty richness that perfectly complements the cherries.
Now, it’s time to infuse your chutney with warm, aromatic spices. A sprinkle of cinnamon adds a hint of sweetness and warmth, while cloves lend a subtle depth and complexity to the flavour profile. Don’t forget the sugar, vinegar and cayenne pepper for those finishing touches. As the chutney simmers gently on the stove, these spices mingle and meld with the fruit, creating a symphony of tastes and aromas that will tantalise your senses.
As the chutney cooks down, the cherries soften and release their natural juices, mingling with the spices to create a thick, glossy sauce that’s bursting with flavour. The walnuts add texture and depth, providing a satisfying contrast to the sweet and tangy cherries.
Once your chutney reaches the perfect consistency – thick and jammy, with just the right balance of sweetness and spice – it’s time to transfer it to sterilised jars, ready to be enjoyed at your leisure. Whether you serve it alongside a cheeseboard at your next dinner party or spread it on a crusty slice of bread for a simple yet satisfying snack, this cherry chutney is sure to delight your taste buds and leave you craving more.
So, why not embrace the joy of homemade preserves and whip up a batch of cherry chutney today? With its irresistible combination of flavours and textures, it’s the perfect way to add a touch of gourmet flair to your everyday meals.

I’ve made this for the last year and still not tired of it. The flavours blend together and the walnuts give that surprising divine crunch.
The crunch of walnuts brings a surprising yet welcome texture. I served it with grilled chicken, and it was a hit with everyone.
I enjoyed the warming spices; they’re perfectly measured, giving the chutney a comforting edge.
I served it with lamb chops, and the flavours blended beautifully. The recipe is straightforward, and the instructions are clear, making it easy for anyone to achieve a professional-quality condiment.
The combination of sweet cherries and warming spices beautifully complements the savoury richness of roasted meats. The cayenne pepper brings just the right amount of heat to elevate the dish without overwhelming it.
The balance of sweetness, acidity, and spice was impeccable, and the cayenne added a gentle heat that lingered nicely.
The tart dried cherries and cider vinegar provided a zesty contrast to the rich cream cheese, while the spices gave it a festive, almost Christmassy warmth.
The walnuts added a unique, nutty crunch that everyone raved about. It’s easy to make and keeps well in the fridge, so it’s ideal for last-minute entertaining.
I made this chutney for a cheese board, pairing it with cream cheese and crackers, and it was the star of the evening.
The consistency is spot-on—thick enough to spoon easily but not cloying. I love that it’s simple to prepare and can be made ahead of time.
The touch of cayenne adds a delightful kick that isn’t overpowering but gives the chutney a lovely depth.
This chutney has become my go-to condiment for roast pork and turkey.
It paired wonderfully with grilled halloumi and flatbread.
This cherry chutney is an absolute flavour explosion! The sweetness from the fresh and dried cherries is perfectly offset by the tangy cider vinegar and warm spices like cinnamon, cloves, and ginger.
