Scotch eggs are a traditional British dish consisting of soft or hard-boiled eggs wrapped in sausage meat. Then coated in breadcrumbs, and then deep-fried or baked until golden and crispy. They are often served as a snack, appetizer, or picnic food. The contrast between the savoury sausage meat and the creamy yolk of the egg makes them a popular and satisfying dish. Scotch eggs can be enjoyed hot or cold, and they are often served with mustard, chutney, or a side salad. Also try them with Spicy Tomato Chutney, Cherry Chutney or Honey Mango Chutney. They have a long history, believed to have originated in 18th century England, and remain a beloved dish in British cuisine today.
Scotch Eggs is a simple recipe of pure sumptuousness. Scotch Eggs is actually a modern abbreviation of ‘scotched’ egg, which is it’s true name. Scotching meat involves hacking it to either tenderise, or roughly mince, which refers to the sausage meat surrounding the egg. Something that is scotched is now generally regarded as being coated in breadcrumbs and fried. These are so easy to make and children love to “help” especially when its picnic season. These are always the first to go and brilliant when in a rush. They are not messy, easy to wrap and filling.
